This exhibit of fresh new pastels by Jean Lau, which is opening on August 6th at the Washington Street Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor, reveals a looser, freer approach to her subjects, both figurative and landscape, while not losing that expressive linear quality for which she is known. This ability to use a moving, searching line to define and sharpen her crisp clear aquatints has made them recognizable to Ann Arbor art patrons over the past 20 years.

Working quickly and intuitively, Lau's strokes skim across the surface of the page, breaking the composition into areas of color and space. Her first concern is about relationships; the relationship of water to land and of land to sky; and in her figurative works, the relationships of the people to each other or to their environment. Pastels have given her the chance to create and change as she moves through each piece, whereas in printmaking, all decisions must be made before the drawing begins.

"Drawing has always been my first love. That ability to put strokes on paper and have them express my feelings is continually a thrill. For me, art is first and foremost a means of communicating; a chance for me to capture what I see and share it with the viewer," Lau says. There will be an opening reception to meet the artist on Friday evening, August 9, from 7-9 pm. All events are free and open to the public. The gallery is handicap accessible.
