| In
this exhibition of new works Jean Lau uses the luscious color
of pastels and the charm of the minimal drypoint line to express herself
and her subject matter. Whether depicting the landscape or the
figure, it is her mastery of color, space and line that defines
and reveals her impressions of reality.
"Drawing has always been my first love. That ability
to put strokes on paper and have them express my feelings is continually
a thrill. For me, art is first and foremost a means of communicating;
a chance for me to capture what I see and share it with the viewer",
Lau says.
Lau began her art studies in special Saturday morning art classes while
in elementary school and continued them at Cass Technical
High School, Detroit, where she majored in both Commercial Art
and Fashion Illustration. She received her Bachelor of Arts
degree from Michigan State University. Upon moving
to Ann Arbor in 1960, she continued her studies with University
of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University faculty members including
Professors Guy Palazolla, Gerome Kamroski, Richard Sears, Ellen Wilt and
Richard Washington.
