Kaplan’s solo exhibit Current Paintings
in Acrylic and Watercolor at WSG Washington Street Gallery
in downtown Ann Arbor brings a burst of color and spontaneous joy to a
dark Michigan winter. The show runs from February 7th through
March 12th with a reception to meet the artist on Friday evening, February
10th, 7-9 pm.
After years of working as a graphic artist, mainly for U-M Hillel Foundation,
and putting her own art on the back burner, Kaplan now finds
the spontaneous paintings she is creating using these two watermedia exhilarating.
Though always seriously committed to the formal aspects of painting, her
main interest in these current works is to create artworks that people
respond to.
Speaking of her own work Kaplan says, "I find it freeing
to be able to communicate through color and brushstroke, to 'tell
my stories' with immediate expression unencumbered by process."
Raised in Hollywood, California, Kaplan began her formal art education
after winning a scholarship while in high school to Chouinard Art
Institute (which later became Cal Arts). Earning her Bachelor of
Fine Arts at USC she continued her studies at UCLA, finally receiving
her MFA from Eastern Michigan University after moving to Ann Arbor in
1970.
