Opening Reception:

Friday, June 24, 7 - 9 pm

Party Fauna, Dee Ann Segula’s solo exhibit at WSG Washington Street Gallery from June 21st through July 30th, showcases drawings, oil and lacquer icons, and large encaustic masks and paintings by this multi-faceted artist.  Carrying out the intriguing theme of masquerade, these richly textured paintings and drawings are filled with costumed and masked figures frolicking with big cats, zebras and other wild animals.

Whether working in metalsmithing, calligraphy, oil painting, printmaking, drawing or mixed media, during the 25 years she has been supporting herself as an artist, Segula has always been known for her elegantly carved, beautifully embellished surfaces. Now this talented artist adds encaustic, an ancient technique of painting with molten beeswax and pigment, to her repertoire and finds it particularly suited to her love of richly worked surface textures.

Segula says of this new work, "In January, 2004, I took a class in encaustic painting from Chris McCauley of Pontiac and have been working with it ever since.  It is the hands-on process that intrigues me; the tactile feel of the medium and the myriad ways you can work with it.  It’s exploring unknown territory and unexpected results.  It’s the beauty and the richness that can be achieved that has held me."

Dee Ann Segula is one of four new artist-owners of the Washington Street Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor and lives in a renovated one-room Baptist church in Milford, Michigan.
