Roesch is presenting a series of new collages titled
Songs of Separation at the Washington Street Gallery from
October 25 through December 4, 2005. Collage is
a departure into a new medium for this Ann Arbor artist
who has, in her two previous solo exhibits at the Washington Street Gallery,
shown her large format, intensely colored abstract oil paintings.
Always thoughtful and introspective, Roesch's new works take a look into
the past from a new perspective, gained perhaps from her years as a nurse
and then as a mother of three daughters. Speaking of these
new works Roesch says, "There is a
stillness in the images that I have used in these collages. That
quiet gives me an opportunity to look beyond the verbal clutter of thought
and explore a silent, visual landscape. I have heard it said that
the past is a foreign country. I feel that I am a traveler there,
seeing everything for the first time."
Having completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas,
Roesch came to Ann Arbor to get her M.Sc. from the University of Michigan.
After a career in nursing and starting her family here, she returned to
school earning a BFA and an MFA in painting from Eastern Michigan University
(EMU). Highly recognized for her painting while at EMU,
Kate Roesch has shown her work throughout Michigan and most recently in
the juried exhibit at the River Gallery in Chelsea. Since
2001, Roesch has been an active member of the Washington Street Gallery.
There will be a reception to meet the artist on Friday evening,
November 4, from 7-9 pm. All events are free and open to
the public. |
