Some may feel that there is no humanity in abstract art. Inspired by dance, geometry, color, space and light, I am seeking to comment on human nature and relationships by creating abstractions of figures in different spaces. I like to emphasize the struggle of the search and the painting process, and enjoy experimenting with various materials such as translucent Mylar, layering and scraping to allow underlying layers to show through. -- Michelle A.

A solo exhibition of paintings, explorations in color and light, by Michelle A. Hegyi, award-winning Ann Arbor artist, will be featured at the Washington Street Gallery from September 18th through October 20th. There will be a reception to meet the artist on Friday evening, September 21st, from 7-9 pm. The artist will also take part in a talk and demonstration at a special Digital Art Night on Friday October 12th, at 7 pm.
Ms. Hegyi's new works, some of which are created solely on the computer, have a sense of exploring and experimenting while still maintaining the painterly qualities, the sense of translucency, the feelings of space, color and light that her earlier award-winning acrylics convey. While traveling back and forth between realism and abstraction, dance and geometry, pure paint and computers, the artist brings a sense of freshness and challenge to her works that imparts excitement to those who have followed her career. Michelle has exhibited widely in Ann Arbor and the surrounding metropolitan area. Most recently her work has been shown in all three Ann Arbor Women Artists' 50th Anniversary Shows at the Slusser Gallery, University of Michigan, the ARC Gallery in Chicago, and the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, Michigan. She received the Best of Show award in both the Ann Arbor Women Painters' Winter Show 2001, and in their Spring Show, 1999. Her work has also been exhibited at the Joanne Winkleman Hulce Center for the Arts, Plymouth, Michigan and the Creative Resource Art and Imaging Gallery in Birmingham, MI.
