“...imagine
elegance in the fashion world
Lynda Cole’s art springs from her education and experience in two rarely related design fields: landscape architecture and fabric design, which she pares down to essential forms - squares, circles, or cubes - that resonate with ‘stillness’. The shimmering colors of foils in silver or palladium undergo slow oxidative change like a seasonal landscape. Her work evokes an openness and peaceful contemplation along with a feeling of focused energy and creative flair.” ~ Martha Keller |

Cole’s one woman show at WSG Washington Street Gallery reveals
her fascination with materials. Using silver leaf, frosted mylar, wax
and digital images she creates contrasts between hard and soft, transparent
and opaque, translucency and reflection, movement and stillness. The
impression is one of cool serenity. Cole says of these works: "I work with materials and imagery that say, Be still for a moment. It is the opposite voice of normal everyday life. The viewer needs to bring his or her own narrative but the mood is set. The materials all have a quality of translucency (wax, frosted mylar) or reflection (silver leaf). With some of these materials I determine the path they take but let them speak for themselves." Stillness Obscured will be on exhibit from September 12th through October 15th at WSG Washington Street Gallery, 120 E. Liberty Street, Ann Arbor. There will be a closing reception to meet the artist on Friday, October 13th from 7 - 10 pm. This will coincide with the Artist Walk in downtown Ann Arbor. On Sunday, September 24th at 2 pm, Ms. Cole will be presenting a Powerpoint talk about the exhibition and her methods. |
