WSG Washington Street Gallery is pleased to present the work of Susan Crowell, a special guest artist during this exhibition. Susan Crowell is Associate Professor of Art at the University of Michigan, where she teaches ceramics and directs the Residential College Art Gallery. Professor Crowell studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Michigan, where she earned her MFA.

In 2003 she collaborated with Italian ceramic artists at two institutions in Sesto Fiorentino, Italy: Istituto Statale d’Arte and Gli Amici della Ceramica. Crowell exhibits her work widely and has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies, in Canada (at Banff), Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki), and Italy (Rome, Venice and Florence) as well as in the United States. Jennifer Thompson to Speak at WSG Gallery

Rolling without Wheels and Flying without Feathers

Friday, August 19, 7 pm at WSG

The Visiting Artist Program at WSG Washington Street Gallery is introducing painter Jennifer Thompson as its newest visiting artist beginning June 2005.

Ms.Thompson will give a gallery talk entitled Rolling without Wheels and Flying without Feathers on Friday evening, August 19 at 7 pm at WSG Washington Street Gallery. She will discuss her process as well as her sources of inspiration.

A passionate creator since before she can remember, Ms. Thompson says she once asked for scotch tape for her birthday.  She says, like other honest, yet awkward people, she uses her artwork to search for meaning and place.  Inspired by poetry and memory, her current works are large, colorful, multi-layered watercolor/mixed media paintings.

Jack Summers

Detroit artist Jack Summers will speak at Washington Street Gallery on Friday evening, February 11th, at 7 pm as part of the Gallery's Visiting Artist Program.

Summers returns to Ann Arbor in February with a series of collages and assemblages built around the theme of the preservation of our natural world. "These shrines to nature," in Summer's words, "are tributes to things past, suggesting that we should look more carefully at things around us".

Using seeds and pods, found objects and recycled images, Summers creates his wall pieces and boxes with a combination of wry humor and social consciousness, often looking at the past through cultural and spiritual diversity.  His artwork will be available in the gallery through April.

"I believe the war which occurs in the mind of the artist, between the competing demands of paint and subject, drives the creative process, firing a form of inquiry....which, to the artist, becomes totally compelling. In the finished work, it is the traces of this struggle which provide the vivid spirit which animates all passionate painting."

Artist's Statement (excerpt):

I am fascinated by the change of ideas and form. In particular I am interested in the tension between the seriality of movement through space and time and the circular nature of evolution and change. We move through our lives in a series of events and moments yet we do not start from an empty piece of paper. Thus all the instants of our lives are both a frame in an endless sequence and part of the circular path of life and evolution.

"This exhibit is not about good and evil.

It is about different ways of seeing, different points of view, perspective. It is also about literal perspective - things far away look smaller. It is also about seeing the whole picture, seeing the details or seeing only part of the picture.
