WSG Gallery is pleased to present

The Pursuit of Happiness, #3: Now and Then,

an exhibition of new acrylic paintings by artist Adrienne Kaplan.

An opening reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on Friday evening July 21,  from 5-7 pm

All invited to the opening reception, which is free and open to the public.

Artist Statement:

Ordinary objects and situations, mysterious vistas, complicated people and profound thoughts attract me. I need to draw and paint them to gain understanding.  Acrylic paints and assorted drawing tools on a variety of surfaces are what I use to solve the puzzles and to create my paintings.

This show, The Pursuit of Happiness, #3: Now and Then, like its precursors, is based on the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’

The Pursuit of Happiness, #3: Now and Then exhibit is meant to be like a graphic novel consisting of eleven small paintings made from my sketches and iPhone photos of visitors to Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, some larger paintings which are individual representations of public park activities, and a few paintings of swim club activities.  Are they all seeking happiness?”

As I was painting the people I saw in the park and in the pool, I remembered the Georges Seurat painting ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’. The idea of a park with a variety of visitors enchanted me.
