I visited Jan Mayen during the time of the midnight sun in 2015. It is a small (146 sq mi), very beautiful, volcanic island at the top of the Mid Atlantic Ridge in the Arctic Ocean. From where we landed on a sunny, warm midsummer day you could run across the skinny part of the island and back in an afternoon or walk up a path to see the scene in this photo, which is what I did. Further along the path was a view of the very majestic, 7,470 ft high Beerenberg volcano. I asked a nurse, one of the few people who lives on the island, what she would do if the volcano erupted. She replied, “take a photo.” LC
