Variations Within A Species is 61” h, 100”w, 4” deep. It is inspired by the shape of goldfinches from the University of Michigan’s Natural History Museum. I spent some time studying birds in the U of M’s collection and drawing/painting birds in the collection. I was fascinated by the variations of color an markings within 1 species. We don’t often get to see birds still and lying in front of us. But in that situation, there is time to really study differences and similarities.

The bird forms in this sculpture are all made from repurposed wire and other materials - some vintage sewing notions from my grandmother’s collection, some vintage fabrics, some discarded or broken toys from my children. Each bird casts several shadows of itself against the wall and ambient airflow creates slight movement of the piece.
